Cross Pollination Lecture Series: Sir Peter Crane and Calista Lyon
April 1, 2021 @ 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm

The Cross-Pollination Lectures is a series of conversations between contemporary artists featured in the “Orchids: Attraction and Deception” exhibition and botanical experts in the field.
This lecture is between interdisciplinary artist Calista Lyon and renowned plant scientist Sir Peter Crane. Peter’s specialization in the fossil history, evolution, and conservation of plants blends well with Calista Lyon’s practice that asks questions, maps, and shares representations of nonhuman and human relationships that work to subvert dominant narratives of individualism that have led to our current ecological crises. Together they will be able to comment on the lessons we can learn about the future from the imprints we leave behind.
This event is brought to you in partnership with the Oak Spring Foundation and the ODU Office of Community Engagement.
Sir Peter Crane is President of the Oak Spring Garden Foundation in Virginia where he works to create new programs that focus on plants, gardens, and landscapes. He is a renowned specialist in the diversity of plant life, including its fossil history, evolution, and conservation
Calista Lyon is an interdisciplinary artist whose work meets at the intersection of installation, social practice, and performance. Her art is influenced by vernacular forms of knowing via farmers, amateur botanists, and conservationists and by scientific thinking, including, theorists, historians, and ethnographers of science.
